Power and Performance

For more than 50 years, NAD has been synonymous with uncompromising performance and exceptional value—and the C 389 HybridDigital DAC Amplifier proudly carries that legacy forward.

Its output stage is built on a refined version of NAD’s proven HybridDigital UcD amplifier design, employing multiple UcD modules in a balanced bridged configuration. A highly efficient switch-mode power supply ensures abundant current reserves, ready to deliver dynamic power on demand. The result: a rock-solid 130W per channel continuous output with virtually no audible distortion, and up to 350W per channel of instantaneous power for effortless handling of musical peaks and transients.

On the digital side, the C 389 employs the same 32-bit/384kHz ESS Sabre 9028 DAC found in NAD’s award-winning Masters M33 amplifier. Renowned for its ultra-low noise, vanishingly low distortion, expansive dynamic range, and near-zero jitter, this DAC brings remarkable clarity, lifelike imaging, and holographic soundstaging to every source.

Future-Friendly Design

NAD’s Modular Design Construction (MDC), first introduced in 2006, gave owners the freedom to expand their systems as technologies evolved. In 2021, NAD advanced this concept with MDC2, which enables two-way communication between expansion modules and the host component for even greater flexibility.

The C 389 features two MDC2 slots, ensuring it can grow alongside future A/V technologies. The first available option is the MDC2 BluOS-D module, which adds BluOS high-resolution multi-room streaming and Dirac Live room correction.

The MDC2 BluOS-D integrates seamlessly with your home network via Wi-Fi or Ethernet, unlocking access to over 20 popular streaming services—including Amazon Music HD, Deezer, Idagio, Qobuz, and Tidal—with full support for lossless and high-res playback. MQA decoding and rendering enable master-quality streaming from Tidal, while Apple AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect, Tidal Connect, and Alexa voice control provide effortless connectivity. With BluOS, the C 389 can become part of a whole-home music ecosystem with up to 64 zones.

Dirac Live room correction, enabled through the MDC2 BluOS-D, analyzes your listening space using the supplied microphone and dedicated app. It then applies precision compensation filters to neutralize standing waves, tame reflections, and refine tonal balance. The result is tighter bass, clearer mids, sharper imaging, and an overall more accurate and immersive listening experience—across all your sources, thanks to MDC2’s two-way architecture.

Everything Connected

The C 389 is designed to accommodate every modern and legacy source. Connectivity options include:

  • Digital inputs: 2 optical and 2 coaxial

  • Analogue inputs: 2 RCA line-level with ultra-low-noise buffer amplifiers

For vinyl lovers, the C 389 features a dedicated MM phono stage with precision RIAA equalization, wide overload margins, and exceptionally low noise. Its innovative design also suppresses infrasonic artifacts inherent to vinyl playback, all without compromising deep bass performance.

Fast, efficient power
The NAD C 389 renders both digital and analog sources with sparkling clarity and commanding authority. At its core is NAD’s highly efficient HybridDigital UcD (Universal Class D) amplifier technology, delivering effortless, distortion-free power.

With 130 watts per channel of continuous power and up to 350 watts per channel of instantaneous dynamic power, the C 389 easily handles dramatic musical peaks and explosive movie soundtracks alike. From the hushed passages of a Beethoven symphony to the thunder of an action blockbuster, this amp drives even the most demanding low-impedance speakers with cool-running precision and vanishingly low distortion.

High-end digital decoding
To complement its power, the C 389 features the state-of-the-art 32-bit/384kHz ESS Sabre ES9028 DAC. Renowned for its wide dynamic range, ultra-low noise floor, and virtually jitter-free performance, this DAC ensures digital music playback with exquisite accuracy, detail, and timing — revealing every nuance in your favorite recordings.

Flexible connections
The C 389 is ready for just about any source you want to connect. Its high-performance internal DAC is accessible through two optical and two coaxial digital inputs, while an HDMI eARC port lets you enjoy TV sound through your hi-fi system — with convenient volume control via your TV’s remote. On the analog side, you get two pairs of RCA line-level inputs, plus a moving-magnet phono stage that delivers clean, natural vinyl playback with ultra-low noise. NAD’s thoughtful phono circuit design reduces subsonic rumble without compromising deep, powerful bass response.

For system flexibility, the C 389 offers dual speaker outputs, preamp outputs, and twin subwoofer outputs for seamless 2.1- or 2.2-channel setups. Wireless options are equally robust, with two-way Bluetooth featuring aptX™ HD for 24-bit streaming from your mobile device, or high-quality output to Bluetooth headphones. There’s even a front-panel 1/4″ jack paired with a powerful headphone amplifier that can comfortably drive high-impedance models.

Future-ready expansion slots
Built with NAD’s next-generation MDC2 architecture, the C 389 includes two expansion slots that make it easy to add new features as technology evolves. First introduced in 2006, NAD’s Modular Design Construction was created to “make obsolescence obsolete,” and MDC2 takes it even further with two-way communication between modules and the amplifier.

Add the optional MDC2 BluOS-D module to unlock full high-resolution music streaming across your home network or the web. Access your personal music library or stream from today’s top services, including TIDAL, Spotify®, Qobuz, and Amazon Music. Apple users can enjoy seamless playback with AirPlay® 2.

Thanks to MDC2’s two-way design, the BluOS-D can even stream audio from your connected sources — such as a turntable — to BluOS speakers and components throughout your home. Plus, its built-in Dirac Live room correction tailors sound to your space, delivering deeper, more accurate bass and a balanced, lifelike soundstage.

Immersive Audio for Music, Movies, and More
The NAD C 389 HybridDigital DAC amplifier is designed to be the centerpiece of your entertainment system. For movies and television, its HDMI eARC input lets you play TV audio through your high-fidelity speakers while controlling volume with your TV’s remote. Dual subwoofer outputs allow you to build a powerful 2.1- or 2.2-channel system for both music and film. With the optional MDC2 BluOS-D module, you can set precise crossover frequencies through the BluOS app, ensuring seamless integration between subwoofers and main speakers.

For private listening, the C 389 includes a dedicated headphone amplifier with low output impedance and exceptionally high voltage capability—perfect even for demanding studio-grade headphones. Bluetooth aptX-HD support makes it easy to enjoy wireless high-resolution playback.

Truly Timeless
Building on over five decades of NAD innovation, the C 389 delivers audiophile-class performance, flexible connectivity, and industry-leading upgradability. Its precise volume control, ultra-low-noise circuitry, and advanced HybridDigital amplifier design provide refined, dynamic sound at lifelike levels with virtually any loudspeaker. Thanks to NAD’s next-generation MDC2 technology, the C 389 is ready for future enhancements like BluOS Hi-Res multi-room streaming and Dirac Live room correction—ensuring it will serve as the heart of your system for years to come.
